작곡가 유상민, 2000년 1월 춘천 출생. 한양대학교 작곡과, 철학과, 수학과 및 물리학과(부전공) 우등졸업. 현재 독일 뒤셀도르프 로버트 슈만 국립음대 작곡과 석사과정 (부전공: 피아노) 재학.
철학자를 꿈꾸며 사색에 잠겼던 중학교와, 수학자를 꿈꾸며 이과에서 공부했던 고등학교를 거쳐, 마침내 작곡가의 길을 걷기로 결심했습니다. 고등학교 3학년이 되던 2017년 작곡가 정영빈을 만나 처음으로 작곡을 배우기 시작했고, 이후 한양대학교 작곡과에서 박명훈과 김지향 교수에게 사사했습니다.
2024년 제78회 제네바 콩쿠르 작곡 부문에서 3위를 수상하였으며, 2025년 여름학기부터 독일 뒤셀도르프 로버트 슈만 국립음대 석사 과정에서 호세 마리아 산체스-베르두(José María Sánchez-Verdú)에게 작곡을, 줄리아 골호바야(Julia Golkhovaya)에게 피아노를 사사하고 있습니다.
나의 음악에 대하여
Without a doubt, my life is comprised of music, philosophy, and mathematics. Through many years of studying these three disciplines, I have come to realize that they form a unified system for me. For example, in mathematics and philosophy, the role of philosophy is indispensable when defining mathematical objects. Similarly, in music and philosophy, we cannot avoid philosophical questions when defining time as a composer. Among them, philosophy plays the role of distributing, regulating, and intergrating music and mathematics. Only within this cycle does a unified system come into being.
In this regard, philosophy holds a significant place in my music. “Philosophy is the art of forming, inventing, and fabricating concepts.1” This is akin to the work I do in composing. There are two ways to incorporate philosophy into music: using it as a theme (or material) and embedding it within the music itself. I have composed many works using the first method. For example, I have incorporated Spinoza (1632–1677)’s “Ethica,” Bergson (1859–1941)’s “Élan vital,” and Deleuze (1925–1995)’s “Différence et répétition,” among others.
The second method is what I ultimately desire as a composer. Transitioning from the first method to the second is the challenge I have been deeply exploring. It is a realm that can only be reached through pure thought. To find an answer to this, I am researching G.W.F. Hegel (1770-1831)’s “Science of Logic (Wissenschaft der Logik).” However, even if philosophy condenses music and mathematics into itself to form a unified system, it is the unique role of music, specifically composition, to unfold and explicate them.
